Mindfulness in the Midst of Chaos
A recent Seattle Times article had me googling…what are the best ways to get us through the next few years? Here is what I came up with for myself, maybe they can be inspiration for you too:
Create a morning routine
…Or an “any time of the day” routine. Routine creates consistency and consistency can create the feeling of stability. Try to do one thing consistently day after day. Maybe it’s just drinking water when you wake up. Maybe it’s journaling before bed. Experiment!
Get involved on a community level
Volunteering allows us to find common humanity and helps us look outside of ourselves.
Find a creative outlet
Creativity can come from anywhere. Sing a song to your dogs, doodle, grow an indoor garden. Find anything that stretches your brain past its comfort zone.
Go outside at least once a day
Yeah it’s hard when its 36 degrees and raining but as soon as you spot a break in the rain go outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and then escape back inside to warmth.
Learn how to breathe
Ok, I know, we all know how to breathe. But try noticing onhow your breathing can impact your mood or emotions. Try taking a deep breath into your belly. Try box breathing. Try it all!
Find out where stress is stored in your body
And once you locate it, try movement to release that stress and anxiety. Shake, jump, laugh, cry, these are all ways to release the tension that we store inside. Don’t hold it in.
Rest
Your body needs it. And this is the season for it.
Care for something other than yourself
Pets or plants anyone? Like getting involved with your community, caring for something outside of yourself keeps you present. Plants and pets have no other choice but to be present. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.
Listen to music that calms you
Musicals? Rap? Jazz? The best kind of music is that which helps you express your emotions.
Get mental health support
Ok this is a shameless plug. But really, individual, couples, or group therapy can be especially healing and give you techniques to face whatever life throws at you.
